why might a patient with a mitochondrial disorder take antioxidants?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

antioxidants prevents oxidation of various components.

mitochondria involved in multiple processes like mainly ATP production, storage of calcium ions and reactive oxygen species generation.

in the mitochondria inner membrane have proteins which are involved in the formation of ATP by transferring electrons in multiple path.

Due the transport of electron in the path of membrane various reactive oxygen species are produced.

Activit of various molecules or oxidents generates oxidative stress to the mitochondria which leads to unfunctioning of mitochondria.

antioxidant removes these oxident molecules and decreases the oxident stress.

Removal of oxidative stress enhances the proper functioning of mitochondria.
