What is the relationship between cofactors, coenzymes, cosubstrates, and prosthetic groups?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Cofactors is the non protein chemical compound. It is bound to the protein and it is needed in the biological activity of protein. They help in biochemical transformation.

Cofactors are of two types:-

1) coenzyme

2)prosthetic group

Coenzymes:-It is the small organic non proteun molecules. It carries chemical group between the compound.example-vitamins.

Coenzyme is the type of cofactor. It is loosely boumd cofactor to the compound.

Prosthetic group are the cofactor that are tightly bound to the enzyme.

Cosubstrate is non protein organic molecule that form a complex with enzyme and is essential for ita activity.
