Outline the conditions that exist in the bathypelagic, abyssopleagic, and hadalpelagic zones, identify one organisms from each of these zones and describe why it is so difficult for creatures to live in these areas of the deep ocean.

Homework Answers

Answer #1
  • Bathypelagic, abyssopelagic and hadalpelagic are zones found in deepest layers of ocean.
  • Bathypelagic zone starts from 1000m to 4000m depth. Eg. Amphipod, squids, etc.
  • Abyssopelagic zone stretches from 4000m to 6000m depth. Eg. Certain sharks , shrimp , etc.
  • Hadalpelagic zone lies below the depth of 6000m. Eg: viper fish, sea cucumbers.
  • It is difficult for organisms to survive in such zones because:
  1. In deeper zones, light does not reach (aphotic zone), so photosynthesis is not possible and hence lesser food is available.
  2. Such deep zones have Extremely high pressure, ~500 times that of normal atmospheric pressure.
  3. Temperature range is very low in such zones (lower than 3°C ).
