Long term depression (LTD) is neuro-physiological term which indicates synapses plasticity, in which, due to triggering activity, signal transmission across a particular synapse decreases. It was discovered in the 1970s in the hippocampus (between CA1 pyramidal cells and Schaffer collaterals) and in 1980s in the cerebellum.  

It has to be noted along with this, that Donald Hebb proposed Long Term Potentiation (LTP) in the early 1970s, which is a kind of activity dependent plasticity that results in enhancing synaptic transmission.
