Which of the following is associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular heart disease (CHD)?

a) high HDL

b) high total cholesterol

c) waist circumference over 45 inches
d) high LDL

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Cardiovascular diseases are due to blockage of vessels, majorly, the coronary artery. The blockage of vessels is due to increased circulating cholesterol in blood.

(a) LDL(low density lipoprotein) is also termed as bad cholesterol. It causes high circulating cholesterol levels in blood. So, it increases the chances of CHD.

(b) High total cholesterol will also lead to increased circulating cholesterol levels in blood & increases the chances of CHD.

(c) A waist circumference of 45 inches & above again means high levels of cholesterol. So, it is also a risk factor for CHD.

☑️(d) HDL(High Density Lipoprotein) is also termed as the good cholesterol. It acts as a scavenger for the bad cholesterol & removes it from the bloodstream, thereby decreasing the chances of CHD.

So, the answer is (d) HDL.

High-density lipoprotein (HDL) is sometimes called the "good cholesterol" because high values are associated with a lower risk of heart disease. According to the American Heart Association, people over the age of 20 years should have at least 40 mg/dL of HDL cholesterol. U.S. women aged 20 and over have a mean HDL of 55 mg/dL with a standard deviation of 15.5 mg/dL. Assume that the distribution is Normal. A special diet is intended to reduce the cholesterol of patients at risk of heart disease. If the diet is effective, the target is to have the average cholesterol of this group below 200. After six months on the diet, a SRS of 50 patients at risk for heart disease had an average cholesterol of xbar= 192, with a standard deviation s=21. Is this sufficient evidence that the diet is effective in meeting the target? A. In order to test...
