Is it likely that a person would have memory B cells that recognize a new surface protein on the virus?
Memory B cells are the lymphocytes which function in the humoral immunity component of adaptive immune system by secreting antibodies. When they came in contact with antigen they gets activated and proliferate and differentiate into plasma cells which form y shape structure called antibodies. These structures are specific to the particular antigen so, able to lock onto the surface of invading cell and mark it for destruction by other immune cells. And the memory cells remains as clone cells with in the body to protect from the attack of same pathogen.
But during the first or any new viral attack takes place, the memory cells do not differentiate into effector cells. but they recognize it as non-self , then the immune system springs into action. Initially, specific symptoms are appear then the prescribed vaccine is given which trigger the memory cells that recognize the virus cells.
