list and describe all types of active transport found within cells. how are these processes different from passive transport?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Active transport is the transport of ions or nutrient against a conc. Gradient. For secondry transport energy is required for transport. Active transport is through the membrane proteins or channels mainly. Active transport is of two types mainly -

1. Primary active transport - In this type of primary transport directly energy is required for transport of ions or nutrient. Example of primary transport is NaK ATPase pump.

2. Secondry active transport - Uses electrochemical gradient generated by energy consumption to transport the ions or nutrient through the cell membrane. Example is Co transport pathways uses secondary active transport.

Passive transport is movement of material across the cell membrane thorough the use of conc. Gradient and doesnot require energy for transport. e. g. Diffusion, Osmosis.

Describe the three mechanisms via which the transport of a solute against its free energy gradient can be coupled to a source of energy (identify the source of energy in each case). Explain the difference between direct (primary) and indirect (secondary) active transport and discuss how these two processes are "connected" to each other in cells. Think about how the effect of Na+/K+ ATPase (Na+/K+ pump) on the intracellular concentration (and electrochemical potential) of Na+ can be used to drive...

Throughout this course, we explored transport across membranes and how concentration gradients are important in a number of different systems. Compare two types of protein-mediated transport across a plasma membrane. One should require an input of energy the other should not. Describe the two transport processes, explain where energy comes from (if it is needed), and discuss the biological relevance of each of these two processes.
