The male gametophyte formed from heterosporous plant microspores. Gymnosperms and angiosperms are pollen grains which are microgametophytes.

The female gametophyte emerging from a heterosporous plant megaspore. The megagametophyte in angiosperms is embryo sac.

Function :- The microgametophyte (pollen) travels in seed plants to the vicinity of the egg cell (carried by a physical or animal vector), and by mitosis produces two sperms. The megagametophyte consists of several thousand cells in gymnosperms, and produces one to many archegonies, each with a single egg cell.
