What are microgametophytes and megagametophytes, and what are their functions in the seed plant life cycle?
The male gametophyte formed from heterosporous plant microspores. Gymnosperms and angiosperms are pollen grains which are microgametophytes.
The female gametophyte emerging from a heterosporous plant megaspore. The megagametophyte in angiosperms is embryo sac.
Function :- The microgametophyte (pollen) travels in seed plants to the vicinity of the egg cell (carried by a physical or animal vector), and by mitosis produces two sperms. The megagametophyte consists of several thousand cells in gymnosperms, and produces one to many archegonies, each with a single egg cell.
