Can the beet technique be used to test osmosis? Describe your hypothesis and the thinking behind your hypothesis.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Yes, the beet root technique can be used for testing osmosis. In this technique, fresh beet root slices are placed in different liquid concentrations so as to observe the effect of osmosis. This can be observed more clearly since the beet root pigments, red in colour, would flow out from the cell, in a direction that us downwards on the concentration gradient.

Hypothesis: effect of different concentrations of on beet root membranes. Alcohol would disrup the membranes, as a result of which, anthocyanin would come out of the cell.

When constructing and implementing hypothesis tests, what reasoning is used behind the statement of the null and alternative hypotheses? Why are hypothesis tests set up in this way? Can a confidence interval obtained for estimating a population parameter be used to reject the null hypothesis? If your answer is yes, explain how. If your answer is no, explain why.
