Answer #1

Pleiotropy is a greek word meaning Pleon- more and tropos -way.

That means single gene responsible for than one traits or disorders.

Phenylketonuria(PKU) is an autosomal recessive metabolic genetic disorder characterized by mutation in the enzyme Phenylalanine hydroxylase(PAH).

A defect in the single gene that codes for PAH enzyme leads to PKU causing mental retardation, eczema, mousy odour, lighter pigmentation etc.

Phenylalanine is one of the most important amino acid which we intake from our diet. PAH helps in breaking Phenylalanine into tyrosine, in the absence of PAH, this phenyalanine converted into phenylketone and other derivatives.

Phenylketonuria (PKU) is a heritable condition in humans involving inability to break down the amino acid phenylalanine because of lack of a certain enzyme. If not diagnosed and treated very shortly after birth, PKU’s develop severe mental disabilities and usually do not reproduce. Almost all PKU children, therefore, are born to parents who are not PKU’s. A). Is the gene responsible for PKU dominant or recessive? Explain how you know. B) The normal (non-PKU) brother of a PKU seeks the...

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disorder that affects mostly the lungs, but also the pancreas, liver, kidneys, and intestine. CF is inherited in an autosomal recessive manner with simple Mendelian inheritance. It is caused by the presence of mutations in the gene for the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) protein. A normal couple intends to have children but consult a genetic counselor because the man has a sister with CF and the woman has a brother with CF....

Part II – Genetic Basis of the Disorder As Alexander’s family and you have now discovered, spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita (SEDC) is a genetic disorder in which the primary deficits are abnormal growth of one or more spinal vertebrae and the growing ends of the femurs, resulting in disproportionate, short-trunk dwarfism (Parikh & Crawford, 2017). Interestingly, both of Alexander’s parents, his grandparents and an older sister are of normal height. Therefore, what do you think the mode of inheritance is for...

Starting from a short-run equilibrium, show and explain how an increase of the money demand affects GDP, using the money-interest, the expenditure schedule and the AD-AS graphs. Assuming that at the initial point the GDP is above the potential GDP, explain how self-correcting mechanisms work after the increase of the money demand.

Question 4 Hereditary hemochromatosis (HH) is a recessively inherited genetic disorder resulting from mutations in the HFE gene. There are several possible mutations of different degrees of importance but the disease expresses itself only when at least 2 are present in any one individual. A blood analysis was performed on 3,000 blood samples from newborn babies of Caucasian descent in the state of Michigan, USA. The results showed that 163 of those sampled carried two mutations in the HFE gene....
