33. The fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster has four pairs of chromosomes, whereas the house fly Musca domestica has six pairs of chromosomes. In which species would you expect to see more genetic variation among the progeny of a cross? Explain your answer.
Ans -
The genetic variation will be more in Musca domestica since there are more number of chromosomes , more number of chromosomes combinations and variations are possible . The possible number of chromosomal combinations in drosophila is 2^n where n= number of haploid Chromosomes . So 2^2 in drosophila = 4 , while in musca domestica its 2^3 = 6 , since musca domestica has an extra set of chromosomes than drosophila ,there is more combination possible which means more chances of variation during crossing over.
