In a replica plating, a master plate with bacteria was plated onto two plates that had the antibiotic ampicillin. The plates stamped both had a lot less bacteria than the master plate. What does this say about the bacteria following Darwin or Lamarck evolution?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

In the master plate, there is no antibiotic. So, no selection pressure.
Hence all bacteria can grow.

In the passaged plates, ampicillin is present. It serves as a selection pressure.
So, only cells that can degrade ampicillin can survive.

Darwinian evolution:
Bacteria that evolved AMP resistance by mutations are selected by the selection pressure (Ampicillin).

Lamarckian evolution:
Some bacteria in the original population was preexposed to ampicillin and they could metabolize it.
Only these colonies grew on the selection plate.

Suppose the two cars had rubber bumpers in the front and back – similar to the bumper cars children (of all ages!) ride at amusement parks. Also, suppose that the cars are sturdy enough that the metal they are made of does not bend during the collision. In this case, the cars would undergo a perfectly elastic collision. Assume just like in the first collision question that the SUV (initially moving to the right) collides into the stationary smart car....

Background: Darwinism Today the theory of evolution is a well-supported, unifying principle in biology, which explains how life on earth began and developed. The scientific evidence overwhelmingly supports the idea that all living things share a common ancestry. Charles Darwin, a British naturalist, is the person most remembered for his contribution to how the process of evolution works. He wrote a book, published over 150 years ago, called On the Origin of Species, which was very controversial at the time....

The Estate Tax One of the richest men in the world, Warren Buffett (as of 2010), suggests that repealing the estate tax will benefit only the richest Americans. In 2010, this is the top 2% of the United States population. To put this in more common terms, 98 of every 100 people who die face no estate tax whatsoever. Nevertheless, many younger Americans assume that the group of richest Americans will eventually include them. Listen to the short Warren Buffet...
