Dr. Conry has prescribed a high-fiber diet (35-40 g/day) with special emphasis on the water-insoluble fibers for Mr. Brown. How would this diet protect against colorectal cancer? Give examples of foods that contain water-insoluble fibers.
Describe fat metabolism in the adipose cell following a meal.
Describe three detrimental physiological effects of excess alcohol consumption.
1) Water insoluble fibers are fibers that do not absorb or dissolve in water. Commonly known as roughage, they add bulk to the digestive system. As the digested food waste may contain carcinogens, they need to be eliminated more efficiently. When digested food contains more insoluble fibers, the elimination rate from the colon is faster, hence protecting the intestinal cells from contact with the carcinogens. Also dietary fibers stimulate bacteria in colon to produce butyrate that inhibits the growth of tumor cells.
Foods that contain water insoluble fibers are wheat bran, beans, lentils, flax seeds, vegetables and whole grains. Animal based foods do not contain dietary fiber.
