Name 3 intercalating agents and state their roles in DNA mutation?
Question
Intercalating agents are the substance which intercalate between the strands of the DNA and disrupt the DNA helical.
The three types of intercalating agents and their role in DNA mutation are :
I. Ethidium bromide : this agent insert between the DNA base pair. Therefore it increases the distance between base pair and unwind the helix.
II. Proflavin: this agent insert in the DNA and less to the disruption of DNA synthesis. In this way, mutation is inserted during DNA replication.
III. Acridine orange : this is a fluroscent dye which interact by DNA by electrostatic attraction and increases the instability of the DNA.
