a. What is the difference between sister chromatid and homologous chromatid?

b. And homologous recombination with which will give back the exact identical original sequence back?

Answer #1

a.Difference are :

  • Sister chromatid refers to chromatid that is made up production of exact copy of either parental chromosome or maternal chromosome while homologous chromatid refers to chromatid that is made up from both the paternal and maternal chromosomes.
  • Sister chromatids contain identical and same versions/alleles of the same genes while homologous chromatids may contain either same or different versions /alleles of the same gene.
  • Sister chromatids are joined by centromere while homologous chromatids are not.

b.Homologous recombination with sister chromatid will give back the exact identical original sequence back as they are exact copy of each other and they possess the same versions/alleles of the same genes.

12. During homologous recombination, what events are required for formation of the heteroduplex? 13. Assume that homologous recombination occurs across a region of DNA containing a wild-type and mutant allele of a particular gene. There is a single base pair change in the mutant allele as follows: wild-type = 5’…TTGGGTA… à5’…TTGCGTA… = mutant allele, such that the resulting dsDNA is as follows:      5’…TTGGGTA…      3’…AACGCAT… What would be the genotype (wild-type or mutant) if base excision repair occurs on the TOP...

2. Haploid yeast cells that preferentially repair double-strand breaks by homologous recombination are especially sensitive to agents that cause double-strand breaks in DNA. If the breaks occur in the G1 phase of the cell cycle (before DNA replication), most yeast cells die; however, if the breaks occur in the G2 phase (after DNA replication), a much higher fraction of cells survive.
