Question: How would you use the Rinnes test to distinguish between unilateral conductive hearing loss, and sensorinureal hearing loss ?
Answer: Rinne's test is used to distinguish between unilateral conductive hearing losse , and sensorinureal hearing loss by comparing the air condution with the bone conduction. In Rinne's test, a vibrating tuning fork is placed close to the external auditory meatus (ear canal) untill the sound disappers. When the sound disppears, place the tuning fork immediately on the mastoid process of the temporal bone just behind the ear. If there is unilateral conductive hearing loss, then bone conduction lasts longer than air conduction. If there is sensorinureal hearing loss, then air conduction lasts longer than bone conduction.
