a rhizome is a part of the main stem which goes vertically downwards under the ground and act as a storage organ and may lead to growth of roots too, while stolon is a kind of runner which runs over the surface and may lead to growth of new plant,one should keep in mind that stolon is not a part of root and also not a part of main stem , along with this, one should keep in mind,that stolon grows faster while rhizome grows slowly.
