The damaged members of the prey are the food for the predators.This can be seen in various levels of food chains and food webs.

Prey can be able to detect that others of their species have been wounded or consumed by cueing on blood or body fluids in the water. If a predator is feeding on a prey and its blood is oozing, the other species of the same prey can detect the smell of blood by olfactory receptors(as in sharks) or other chemical cues so that it may be aware of the presence of a predator in the vicinity.To safeguard its own life, its beneficial to detect damaged members of a prey species.
