Discuss the role of auxin and polar auxin transport in embryo development.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

In all multicellular organisms extensive communication is required between cells and tissues in order to coordinate growth and development. Both plants and animals have signaling chemicals, traditionally termed hormones that mediates short and long distance communications. The first phytohormone to be discovered was auxin,a substance that increase wide variety of developmental process. It has been known that unique property of auxin is its directional movement between cells (polar auxin transport).

POLAR AUXIN TRANSPORT (PAT)

It is characterised by its strictly controlled directional movement. The general properties of PAT are that it moves in cell to cell manner, requries energy,is relatively slow, sensitive to protein synthesis inhibitors. Auxin ordinaly transport from apical yissue to the root tips. In the stem, it is found in vascular cambium and xylem parenchyma.

think about the role of auxin in plant development. Describe one similarity and one difference regarding the role of auxin as a morphogen to the role of BMP. One sentence each, which includes a clear explanation Auxin is a long range signaling molecule in plants. In animals, development is controlled by long-range and short range signals. Using the phylogeny below, and what you know about auxin and animal embryo morphogens, are true morphogens like BMP/DPP an ancestral or derived characteristic?...

TRANSPORT INHIBITOR RESPONSE (TIR) proteins, AUXIN/INDOLE-3-ACETIC ACID (Aux/IAA) proteins, and AUXIN RESPONSE FACTOR (ARF) proteins all play key roles in regulating the expression of AUXIN RESPONSE GENE (ARG) genes that harbour AUXIN RESPONSE ELEMENTS (AREs) in their promoter sequences in response to auxin. Describe the functional role of TIRs, Aux/IAAs and ARFs in regulating the expression of ARG genes that harbour AREs in their promoters in response to auxin expression.
