Which type of immunity is first line of defense when a biomaterial is implanted is the body?
Poly (ethylene glycol) PEG coating are often used to biomedical implants. How does PEG reduce protein adsorption?
Innate immunity cimprising of phagocytes, neutrophills, mast cells etc are the first line of defence that come into action when any biomaterial is implanted in the body. The surface properties of the biomaterial modulate the foreign body reaction during first two or three weeks. Once inside the body the biomaterial gets coated with a protein layer thereby hampering its activity.
To avoid binding of non specific proteins the biomaterial is coated with PEG which forms a brush layer around the material thereby causing steric repulsion between the protein molecules. Besides a hydration shell is formed around the biomaterial which prevents the adsorption of proteins.
