As we have seen in the evolution of organisms, Living together is always an advantage.

Prokaryotes > Unicellular Eukaryotes > Multicellular eukaryotes > complex organisms > Animal groups > Social relations

This togetherness of individual cell making a group or colony, allow them to survive easily and finding a solution to given circumstance is easier with large group compared to an individual. Colonial protists work together as a multicellular organism and it is beneficial for the survival of them.
