a) glycocalyx-adherence

b) pilli-reproduction

c) cell wall-toxin

d) cell wall- protection

e) plasma membrance- transport

The answer is b but I dont understand how because pili aide in conjugation, the transfer of DNA from one cell to another which is reproduction..and I dont know why cell wall and toxin are not mismatched

Answer #1

Pili - reproduction - Pili is used in bacterial conjugation for transferring genes to an already existing cell. The transferred gene may be beneficial to the recipient cell - like antibiotic resistance or sometimes can be parasitic. In reproduction a completely new organism is formed as result of a sexual or asexual act. Hence, pili is not involved in reproduction.

The polysaccharide present in the peptidoglycan of the bacterial cell wall is considered to be toxic as it elicits immmune response in organisms.
