Examination of a cell by transmission electron microscopy reveals a high density of ribosomes and mitochondria in the cytoplasm. What does this suggest?
Examination of a cell by transmission electron microscopy reveals high density of ribosomes and mitochondria in the cytoplasm. The ribosomes are involved in the protein synthesis pathway. Ribosomes along with endoplasmic reticulum or cytoplasmic free ribosomes are involved in the protein synthesis. But recent studies have revealed the role of mitochondria in protein synthesis. When mitochondrial proteins are being synthesised, the cytoplasmic ribosomes occur in close proximity to the mitochondria and they synthesise the proteins required for mitochondrial functions. Hence high density of ribosomes and mitochondria in TEM reveal that protein synthesis is taking place.
