The first leg of the Cricket World Cup 2007 held in Jamaica ended in the elimination of one of the favorite teams Pakistan, by the lowly Irish team. On the following morning, the Pakistani coach, Bob Wolmer, a diabetic, who had been drinking alcohol during this most exciting game, was found dead in his room.

After extensive forensic investigation which included assistance from Scotland Yard, no foul play was found as the cause of Wolmer’s death.

If you were are called in as a Biochemist to give your opinion on the causation of Wolmer’s death, what answer would you have given to explain Wolmer’s death?

If I would be called as a biochemist to give my opinion on Bob Wolmer death ,my opinion would be -

Bob Wolmer was known diabetic. Drinking alcohol in excess amounts can lead to excess insulin production in pancreas which causes the glucose stores to become dangerously low resulting in hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia is serious condition which can result in coma and death within short span of time.

Also , there was exictment of the cricket match and he as a coach of the team would have really exicted which could have resulted in heart attack.

Therefore , post mortem reports would reveal if the death was due to heart attack or hypoglycemia.
