which one is used for cell-cell recognition? glycoprotein or glycolipid and can you briefly explain the function of each

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Both glycoproteins and glycolipids are involved in cell-cell recognition

Glycoproteins are involved in cell- cell recognition. Any polypeptides with attached glycans are glycoproteins. The protein's segment which is extended from the membrane is glycosylated. The extended glycans from the surface communicate with other glycans of glycoproteins of other cells. The unique pattern of the oligiscchrides can be read by the corresponding oligosacchrides of other cells. mostly it occurs by lock and key model.

Glyclipids are lipids attached with carbohydrates by the glycosidic bond.Glycolipids can also involved in stbilty of cell membrane and cell-cell recognition. It is important for immune system, and connecting one cell to other tissues. The carbohydrate of the glycolipid binds to the complementary carbohydrate or to a lectin (carbohydrate-binding protein), of a neighboring cell.

Explain briefly why recrystallization can never result in 100% mass recovery even if you used pure material. Also explain why mass recovery is greater if you cool to 0 degrees C rather than room temperature. Explain very briefly why mass recovery is reduced if you use an excess amount of boiling solvent and why washing product crystals with excessive amounts of solvent especially warm solvent can result in reduced mass recovery.

P-glycoprotein 1 (Pgp) is a membrane protein that normally protects the cell by using energy from ATP to pump a wide range of toxins and other foreign compounds out of the cell, so that they can be removed by the body. This includes a large range of drugs, including crizotinib and ceritinib. Some cancer cells have developed a resistance to many drugs (known as multidrug resistance) based on genetic changes to Pgp. Which of the following mechanisms would be likely...
