A solution of 5% starch, 5% glucose and 5% salt is placed into a bag of dialysis tubing. The tubing is only permeable to water, not permeable to glucose and starch. If the bag is submerged in distilled water, what will happen to all of the molecules involved? Identify which of the original solutions was hypertonic, hypotonic, or isotonic where applicable.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Distilled water has no salt concentration. Thus its osmotic pressure is lower than the solution in the bag, hence the original solution is hypertonic. When the bag is submerged in distilled water, being a hypotonic solution distilled water will move inside the bag as solute concentration inside the bag is more. Thus the concentration (mole/litre) of all the solutes disolved will decrease due to the increase in concentration. The water will continue to flow inside the bag till both the solutions become isotonic, i.e when the solute concentration inside the bag will become very low.

Dialysis tubing comes in different ratings for permeability, depending on how big the holes are in the tubing. You are a dialysis technician and you must choose the right tubing for your patient. You choose the one with the pores that are just large enough to allow glucose to pass through but not larger molecules. Once the blood has passed through the machine and is back in the patient, identify which of the following substances will have been filtered from...

Cholera and other diarrheal diseases cause nearly 2 billion cases of diarrhea annually. Cholera toxin and other bacterial toxins cause the intestine to secrete fluid into the lumen of the gut, depleting the extracellular fluid (ECF) volume. If fluid loss is not matched with fluid intake (law of mass balance), the result is severe dehydration, circulatory collapse, and even death. Drinking a rehydration solution is the most rapid and effective way to replace the large volumes of water lost by...

In this experiment you will construct a smal electrolytic cell. Then using indicators you will determine the products fromed at the anode and the cathode druing several different electrolysis experiments. About the experiment: in the first part of this experiment you will construct a small scale chlorine production plant. it is a miniature of the real, large scale process used for production of chlorine by the electrolysis of sodium chloride or brine (procedure written by Dr. Stephen thompson, CSU, CO)...

Chemical Reactions Types and Their Equations Making Heat with Chemical Reactions Have you ever wondered how an instant heat pack works? A disposable heat pack works by a chemical reaction that combines iron in the package with oxygen from the air when the outer packaging is removed producing iron oxide. You have probably seen the product of this reaction in what is commonly called rust. The reaction releases heat, which allows the pack to reach a sufficient temperature that is...
