On a hot day, you sweat to maintain your body temperature. Explain how the evaporation of sweat helps remove heat from your skin.

Answer #1

Evaporation of water from the skin surfce helps to convert water in a liquid form to the vapor state by absorbing the heat from the skin. This heat that is being absorbed by water is called the heat of vaporization. As the water absorbs more heat it changes from liquid to gas form and the area of sweat feels cool as the body temperature is reduced. Heat of vaporization is  540 calories/gram, so if a person produces say 100gms of sweat then a total of 540*100= 54000 calories of heat will be removed as sweat evaporates.

The evaporation of sweat is an important mechanism for temperature control in some warm-blooded animals. Part A What mass of water must evaporate from the skin of a 67.0 kg man to cool his body 1.05 ∘C? The heat of vaporization of water at body temperature (37.0 ∘C) is 2.42×106J/kg. The specific heat of a typical human body is 3480 J/(kg⋅K). Express your answer in kilograms. B:What volume of water must the man drink to replenish the evaporated water?

Consider a poor lost soul walking at 5 km/h on a hot day in the desert, wearing only a bathing suit. This person's skin temperature tends to rise due to four mechanisms: (i) energy is generated by metabolic reactions in the body at a rate of 260 W , and almost all of this energy is converted to heat that flows to the skin; (ii) heat is delivered to the skin by convection from the outside air at a rate...
