please explain about the fertilization, after the sperm enter the egg, what will happen to the membrane potential of the egg to block other sperms

Homework Answers

Answer #1

A single egg is surrounded by many sperms attached to it. It is very important that only one of the sperm should be fused with the membrane to deliver the sperm nucleus inside the egg cell for fusion. Egg cells are equipped with a mechanism that prevents polyspermy known as 'a fast block to polyspermy'.
Before the adding of the sperm cell, the membrane potential of the egg cell is maintained around -70mv. Within 1 to 3 seconds of the entry of sperm nucleus inside the egg the membrane potential shifts to a positive direction. The rapid depolarization of the egg cell membrane is due to the influx of Na+ ions preventing additional sperm cell to fuse with the egg cell.

Identical twins are produced from the same sperm and egg (which splits after the first mitotic division), whereas fraternal twins are produced from separate sperm and separate egg cells. If two parents, one with brown eyes (a dominant trait) and the other with blue eyes (the recessive trait) produce one twin boy with blue eyes, what is the probability that a fraternal twin will transmit the blue eye allele to his or her offspring? A sperm that fertilizes an egg carries its mitochondria into the egg’s cytoplasm. However, male-derived mitochondrial nucleoids have completely disappeared within 60 min after fertilization. This experimental observation is most likely due to ________________. a) The “bottle-neck” inheritance of mitochondria.' b) The degradation of mitochondrial proteins. c) The degradation of mitochondrial DNA. d) The dilution of male-derived mitochondria in the egg’s cytoplasm. e) The incompatibility of male and female mitochondria. I chose answer c) The degradation of mitochondrial DNA but...
