Who first proposed the presence of signals in plants?
Burden?Sanderson (1873) and Charles Darwin (1875) demonstrated the presence of electrical signals in insectivorous plants. Darwin (1881) provided evidence for presence of chemical signals in plants. Bose (1924), and Barbara Pickard (1973) also gave evidence for presence of electrical signals (action potentials) in a wide range of plants. In 1983, scientists - Jack Schultz and Ian Baldwin reported defense systems in maple tree saplings. The injured trees were alerting neighbors for the presence of a predator by releasing chemical signals. Richard Karban also supported the idea of different forms of communication in plants.
