Explanation of DNA finger print ar the cellular/DNA
level?
DNA fingerprinting = DNA
profiling
It is a molecular biology method used to detect differences in the
DNA sequence that are diagnostic for a given individual. Humans
contain a large genome. Most of the human genome contains
non-coding segments. these noncoding segments exhibit a greater
polymorphism as compared to the coding regions. These polymorphisms
are highly variable and can be unique to each individual i.e. these
polymorphisms can be used to the identity of an unknown DNA sample.
These polymorphisms include SNP, inversions, deletions, or
duplications. They can be detected by PCR and restriction
digestion.
Some of the commonly used DNA markers are SSLP, RAPD, RFLP, and
VNTR.
Applications of DNA
fingerprinting:
1. Paternity disputes
2. Identifying the identity of an unknown biological sample at a
crime scene
3. Food testing
