A newly discovered microorganism is an obligate fermenter. WHen growing in the presence of glucose, arabinose, and gluconate, which carbon source is used first, second and third and WHY?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

As mention in question micro organisms is Obligate fermenter- it means it is obligate anaerobic organism. So it will first use glucose as carbon source, it will brake down glucose into pyruvic acid and then by mixed acid fermentation pathway or lactic acid fermentation pathway it will yield ATP and glucose will be fermented to produce acids.

When glucose in medium will exhaust , no glucose available to use then it will start utilizing Arabinose as carbon source. Arabinose operon is activated only when glucose is not available in medium. So first glucose second arabinose will be utilized and when arabinose also exhausted it will use gluconate; only remaining carbon source.

You have discovered a fabric which when it contains an adsorbent such as activated carbon can be used to make an overcoat that can protect you from toxic chemicals. In a test of such fabric, a gas stream containing 8.0 mg/L of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) was passed through 7.71 g sample of the fabric at a rate of 1 L/min and the concentration of CCl4 in the gas leaving the fabric was monitored. The run was continued for 15 min...

1 In the absence of oxygen, cells consume glucose at a high, steady rate. When oxygen is added, glucose consumption drops precipitously and is then maintained at the lower rate. Why is glucose consumed at a high rate in the absence of oxygen and at a low rate in its presence? 2 In the following diagram showing the distribution of thermal energy in a population of substrate molecules, the energy thresholds indicated by numbers represent ... Fungi Fungi are the great decomposers of the biosphere. Most plants form mycorrhizae with fungi to increase absorptive area without having to grow more roots, in this relationship fungi recieve carbohydrates from plants. Humans consume fungi, mushrooms, may use fungi as a source of drugs for blood pressure, antibiotics and immunosuppresive drugs. Fungi are used in biotechnology to produce fermetation products, and some have been very useful models to study gentics in eukaryotic cells that are unicellular such as yeasts....
