Answer #1

Genes code the proteins. They tell the body what and how much of a protein to make.Normally, men have one X chromosome and women have two X chromosome .X- inactivation is the process where one of a woman's X chromosomes gets shut off.So they both have one working X chromosome. For example,Some people, child have blue eyes because the gene for eye color is broken, due to X-inactivation.So,people,child with brown or green eyes have more working copies of eye colour genes than people have blue eyes.

Traditionally, blue-eye color is considered recessive to brown eyes in humans although, as noted in the chapter, eye color in humans is not a single gene trait. It has occasionally been the subject of folklore and “common knowledge” that blue-eyed parents usually have blue-eyed offspring. However, blue-eyed parents do often have brown-eyed children. In addition, when one brown-eyed child is born in this family, it is expected that subsequent children will also have brown eyes. Assuming the blue eyes really...

2. In a particular species of salamander the skin can either be black or brown. The black phenotype is recessive to the brown phenotype. Within a population of 1000 salamanders, 640 have the brown phenotype. Calculate the allele frequencies for this population. Show all of your work. How many heterozygotes are there? Make up an environmental change that could occur (not an oil spill or something we’ve talked about, invent your own) that would cause a shift in the allele...

You discover that the underlying cause of a disease is decreased expression of the protein X due to a lower amount of the mRNA encoding protein X in cells. You find the corresponding mutation in the genome related to this disease. What kind of defect caused by this mutation can create the defective expression of the protein X? Describe two possible mechanisms (there are many possibilities). The best answers will include the nature of the mutation and how it impacts...
