What sort of environmental condition(s) selects for carnivorous plants?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Most of the insectivorous plants are found in the water-logged soil which are deficient in nutirents like nitrogen and phosphorous. They compensate the lack of these nutients by digesting the insects. The ability to trap the pray for nutrients is the result of natural selection. According to researhers, the leaf of such plants have gained new enzymatic functions which help in breaking down the chitin of insects and utilizing their nutrients.Already existing genes in the plant acquired new biological function in course of evolution to cope up with the deficiency of nutrients.

The allele for the albino condition in corn plants is recessive to the allele for normal pigmentation. A cross between two plants heterozygous at this locus produces 126 normal and 66 albino plants. a. How many plants are expected in each phenotypic class? b. In alpine and tundra habitats, plants have to cope with severe environmental conditions (cold and wind) during winter. In the summer, they produce extreme floral displays in order to attract pollinators, since the summers are short and the reproductive window is small. Discuss these strategies from the point of view of Grime’s C-S-R model.

In sesame plants, the one pod condition (P) is dominant to the three-pod condition (p), and normal leaf (L) is dominant to wrinkled leaf (l). These traits are inherited independently.
