Write out the chemical reaction that shows the interaction of the catalase enzyme with hydrogen peroxide and the products of this reaction. What two genera of microbes does this test distinguish between?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Ans. The reaction of the Hydrogen peroxide with Catalase will result in breaking down of the Hydrogen peroxide into oxygen and water as oxygen being a gas wants to escape liquid by oxygen bubbles and thus forms Foams.

Rection :

2H2O2 + Catalase (in presence of)   2H2O + O2

This test to demonstrate the presence of Catalase enzyme. This test is used to distinguish bacteria those who produce catalase and those who not. The 2 bacterial genera such as staphylococci is differentiated from the non-catalase producing bacteria such as streptococci.
