Question

Explain what predator facilitation is.

Explain what predator facilitation is.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Predator facilitation is a situation arises when a prey is targeted by multiple types of predators. When prey responds to one predator for its defence, it becomes vulnerable to another predator at the same time. In this way, one predator facilitates other type of predator to take on the common prey. Thus, predator facilitation is the ability to facilitate another predator's action or reaponses to certain prey.

e.g., Gerbils have sandy habitats in a desert. They are the common prey for two types of predators: vipers and owls. When gerbils attempt to defend themselves from owls, they are easily exposed to vipers. Thus, owls facilitate predation by vipers.

Predator-prey dynamics can be mathematically modeled using the _______ predator-prey model. This model suggests that predator and prey populations have a tendency to _______ because the abundance of one population is dependent on the abundance of the other. These type of predator-prey dynamics can also be observed in nature, but other factors can also affect prey abundance, thus impacting their population dynamics. For example, prey population dynamics can also be affected by changes in their _______ supply, or due to...

You are studying the predator-prey relationship between lizards (predator) and beetles (prey). The intrinsic growth rate of beetles in the absence of lizards (r) is 0.2 per week, and the mortality rate of lizards in the absence of beetles (m) is 0.1 per week. The attack rate (a) is 0.004, and the efficiency at which beetle biomass is converted into lizard biomass (b) is 0.25. Imagine a predator–prey interaction in which a certain number of the prey population cannot be eaten because of a refuge in their environment that the predator cannot enter. a. Why might interaction terms like −s(P − w)Q and v(P − w)Q be reasonable in the modeling equations? Explain what those interaction terms mean? b. What is the meaning of w? (What does the variable stand for?) c. In a biologically realistic model, can P < w? Why or why not?
