Discuss three naturally occurring mechanisms of bacterial gene transfer

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Transduction, Transformation and Conjugation are the three naturally occurring method of gene transfer in bacteria.

Transduction- transduction is the process of transfer of DNA from one bacteria to another bacteria via bacteriophage.

Transformation- transformation is the process of intake of naked DNA by recipient which was released by donor. Recombination occur between single molecule of transforming DNA and chromosome of recipient bacteria. to be active in transformation a DNA molecule must be 500 nucleotide long

Conjugation- conjugation is the process of transfer of DNA via sexual pilus and hence requred cell to cell contact.

To determine whether regulation of gene expression by short RNAs was a naturally occurring phenomenon, researchers isolated RNA from a cell and fractionated them by size to obtain only short RNAs. The next step was to clone these molecules. Today the cloning step would not be required. Which of the techniques below is the best reason why? Because a microarray could tell if the fragments were encoded by the genome. Because a PCR reaction could tell if the fragments were...
