In fruit flies, long wings (L) are dominant over short wings (l).

In a population of 45 fruit flies, 27 have LL genotypes, 13 have Ll genotypes, and 5 have ll genotypes.

Find the frequency of the following. Show all work and record your answer as a value between 0 and 1 rounded to two decimal places.
a. long-winged fruit flies:

b. short-winged fruit flies:

Answer #1

It is given that fruit flies wings are controlled by L/l gene in which long wings is Dominant and represented by allele = L. While short wings is recessive nd represented by = l = ll (condition).

As L is Dominant to l then, flies having Genotype = LL and Ll will have long wings while ll Genotype will have short wings.

Total population of fruit flies = 45.

LL Genotype flies = 27 = long wings phenotye

Ll Genotype flies = 13 = long wings phenotye

ll Genotype flies = 5 = short wings phenotye

Frequency of following :

Ans 1) long winged fruit flies = LL and Ll

= 27 + 13

= 40 ------------ long winged flies

Frequency = long winged flies / total flies

= 40 / 45

= 0.88888

= 0.89 ( rounded to 2 decimal places)

Ans 2) short winged flies = ll

= 5

Frequency = short winged flies / total flies

= 5/45

= 0.11111

= 0.11 ( rounded 2 decimal places)
