Describe the Structure and function of IgG antibody (10marks)
Structure of IgG antibody:
Immunoglobulin G antibodies are made up of four peptide chains. Two heavy and two light chains are present. The heavy chains are attached to each other and light chains by disulfide bonds. The structure is a tetramer forming the shape of letter Y. The antigen binding site is present on the end of each fork.
Function of IgG antibody:
They play an important role in humoral immunity. It is one of the main type which is found in extracellular fluid and blood. This helps in controlling the infections of the body tissues. Some of the important functions are:
1. IgG mediated binding of the foreign particles and antibodies causing the agglutination.
2. Opsonization
3. Neutralizing toxins
4. Type II and type III hypersensitivity reactions.
