Outline glycolysis in terms of input, output, by- products, and energy (ATP) generation/consumption.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Glycolysis is the process by which a molecule of glucose is oxidised (partially) to two molecules of pyruvate. Net reaction of glycolysis :

glucose+2NAD+ + 2ADP+ + 2Pi-->> 2 pyruvate+ 2NADH+ 2ATP+ 2H2O

Inputs: 1 molecule of glucose , 2NAD+ , 2ATP, 4 ADP, 2Pi

Outputs: 2 pyruvate, 4 ATP, 2 NADH, 2 ADP

By products : water molecule, 2 NADH , 2 ADP

Energy generation = 2 ATP

note that 2 ATP molecules are consumed and 4 are produced. So net 2 ATP molecules are formed.

Glycolysis requires ATP and yet is an important step in cellular respiration - the process by which we make ATP. How can this be? Glycolysis requires a net ATP input but produces GTP, which is needed for the rest of cellular respiration Glycolysis results in a net ATP output Glycolysis is not part of respiration, it is only used in fermentation Glycolysis requires a net ATP input, but produces carbon dioxide, which is needed for the rest of cellular respiration
