Homework Answers

Answer #1

Ester is formed by addition of carboxylic acid and alcohol and removal of water.

2) Complex lipids are the esters offatty acids with alcohols having additional groups like carbohydrates, phosphates, etc. Example is phospholipids. Phospholipids are

  • an important constituent of the cell wall.
  • Lecithin and sphingomeylin are surfactant lipids.
  • Phosphatidyl inositol is a second messenger.
  • Cardiolipin is present in heart mitochondria.
  • Phosphatidyl serine is involved in apoptosis.

Triglycerides are made up of one glycerol chain and three fatty acids. Steroids is made up of cyclopentanoperhydrophenanthrene nucleus.

Triglycerides is produced by the body. Steroids are produced by the body or can be obtained through diet.

Triglycerides can be used for energy. Steroids don't provide energy.
