An experiment was conducted and the composition of the selectively permeable membrane was changed so that it became impermeable to carbon dioxide but remained permeable to oxygen. Explain how this manipulation will effect oxygen diffusion, carbon dioxide diffusion and muscle cell function?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

This experiment is resulted in the following :

1. As, the semi permeable membrane become imperable to carbon dioxide, so it will stop the diffusion of carbon dioxide from the cells to the outside of the body for excretion. It will lead to the death of the cell.

2. As, the plasma membrane is permeable to oxygen, the diffusion of oxygen will occur from external environment to inside the body.

3. Muscle cell function will be retarted because it will take oxygen necessary for ATP production but as during the exercise carbon dioxide is not released from the muscle because of the imperable nature to carbon dioxide will lead to the stopping of functions of the muscles.

Diffusion of gases across a permeable membrane 1. How long did it take the O2 levels to become about equal outside and inside the cell? What happened to those levels after they became about equal over the additional 10 seconds? Why did this happen? My answer: It took 6 seconds to become equal. After they became about equal over the additional 10 seconds they fluctuate back and forth as equal equilibrium is achieved. 2.Cell use O2 and produce CO2 as...

Background Almost all animal and plant cells require oxygen and give off carbon dioxide. This is called gas exchange and it occurs by passive diffusion. Some animals do all or most of their gas exchange across their skin (for example amphibians) but they have very low metabolisms and use very little oxygen and get rid of very little carbon dioxide. On the other hand humans (and other mammals) have very high metabolic requirements and we can’t rely on gas exchange...
