  • Akinete is an enveloped, thick-walled, nonmotile asexual resting spore formed by the thickening of the parent cell wall, formed by filamentous, heterocyst-forming cyanobacteria. Akinetes are resistant to cold and desiccation.
  • Heterocyst is a large, transparent, thick walled cell that is found in cyanobacteria. Heterocysts are involved in the process of carrying out nitrogen fixation.
  • Pyrenoids are dense structures present inside the chloroplasts, which are are associated with the operation of a carbon-concentrating mechanism (CCM).
