The thymus and bone marrow are considered _________ lymphoid tissue.
A. secondary
B. primary
C. MALT
D. GALT
Primary lymphoid tissue
In general, lymphoid tissue is categorized as either primary or secondary. The bone marrow and thymus are the primary lymphoid tissues in mammals. It is at these sites that lymphocytes develop and central tolerance is established; that is, most self-identifying lymphocytes are removed, and only cells that recognize foreign antigens are allowed to mature. At this site, all lymphocytes derive from HSCs in the bone marrow and B cells are largely mature, while newly formed T cell precursors migrate from the bone marrow to the thymus and mature there.
