Depolarization of the sarcolwmma means

Depolarization of the sarcolwmma means

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Sarcolemma is the outer covering of muscele fibers. Musclie fibers is the froup of muscle cells. in resting stage, the inside of sarcolemma maintains a negative charge and outside of membrane is positively charged and thus, it is polarized. When a stimulas is applied, sodium channel opens and entry of sodium inside the sarcolemma membrane occures which causes depolarization of sarcolemma and thus impulse transmission occurs. Hence, Depolarization of sarcolemma shows that the nerve impulse is transmitting from the nerve cell to the muscle cell. It indicates that a muscle is working properly.

I understand that depolarization is driven by sodium in most cases. However, in smooth muscle, is the ion that is driving depolarization calcium? Since calcium is the ion that increases in concentration for smooth muscle action potential propagation, would that make it the ion that depolarizes?

In skeletal muscle, the sarcoplasmic reticulum regulates the intracellular concentration of calcium. During depolarization in cardiac muscle, calcium enters the intracellular fluid from additional sources. Where, besides the SR, does the calcium come from? (this question asks where the additional calcium is coming from, not how it’s getting through the membrane). In skeletal muscle, the sarcoplasmic reticulum regulates the intracellular concentration of calcium. During depolarization in cardiac muscle, calcium enters the intracellular fluid from additional sources. Where, besides the SR,...
