explain how natural selection led to flu illness in patients, even though they received the flu shot

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Natural selection led to evolution of viruses. For example flu virus.

Viruses have high mutation rates, so when viruses are replicating genetic mutation may occur that led the virus to be weaker or may be stronger. When mutation allows the virus to become stronger, then by natural selection it will survive more successfully.

During flu season, the strand of flu which was in the flu shots, was not successful because strand that was made for the vaccine has changed.

Flu viruses continuously changes through a natural process called as antigenic drift. But degree of antigenic drift and the frequency of drifted viruse may vary for seasonal flu vaccine.

Therefore during flu season even though person received the flu shot led to flu illness in patients.

2) An outbreak of the human flu virus among individuals that had received their annual flu shot led researchers to hypothesize that the outbreak was due to a new strain of virus. Therefore, they decided to compare the genetic characteristics of the purported new viral strain to that of the virus for which the flu shot vaccine had been developed. The researchers determined the number of point mutations at a specific locus in the new viral genome from blood samples...

How are natural selection and artificial selection similar? How are they different? Discuss some ways (other than yield) that agriculture has used artificial selection in crop production. Why would these make agriculture easier? In what ways would these traits be detrimental to the species of plant? Why? In other words, what are some of the drawbacks in artificial selection?
