Describe species richness when used with populations.
Species richness is the presence of different number of species present in an ecological community, ecosystem or at any other region. It takes into account only the species richness (number of species) but doesn't take into account the abundance of that species. Sometimes species richness also considered synonymous of species diversity which also takes into account species evenness.
Heterogeneity of the sample also affects species richness for example individual selected from different habitats may have higher species richness than individuals selected from similar environmental conditions . Also species richness increases with increase in samplings area. Relative conservation value of an area or habitat depends on species richness. The habitat with high endemic species will have high conservation value.
