What types of macromolecules accumulate in patients with Zellweger syndrome?
Ans. Zellweger Syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive disorder. It is characterized by absence of functional peroxisomes in the cells of an infected individual.A s a result of absence of Peroxisomes the individual's cells and tissues start to accumulate very long chain fatty acids (VLCFA)and Branched chain fatty acid(BCFA),which in the normal conditions degraded in peroxisomes. The accumulation of these fatty acids impair the normal functioning of multiple organ systems.
