Quick question class, is fat or carbohydrate the preferred energy source for the body? is it situational?

Answer #1

Carbohydrates are the preferred source of energy for the body.

The body prefers use of carbohydrates as the source of fuel for biological activities. During bouts of high intensity exercise, carbohydrates are used as the preferred source of fuel for 2-3 minutes. Beyond that point, fats serve as the fuel source and start to provide energy for the exercise.

This means that carbohydrates are the primary choice of energy. Once the carbohydrate store is depleted, the body transitions to fats as the source of energy.

Horowitz and Coyle (1993) tested six meals, each with carbohydrate at a dose of 0.7 g/kg body weight, fed 30 min prior to 60 min of exercise at 50-70% VO2max. The carbohydrate sources were either potato, rice, or sucrose. Each carbohydrate source was consumed alone in one trial and in another trial with added fat. The addition of fat reduced the glycemic responses of the carbohydrate sources. Of the six treatments, the three with the highest glycemic effects were potato,...

Small birds can migrate over long distances without feeding, storing energy mostly as fat rather than carbohydrate. (Figure 1) Fat is a good form of energy storage because it provides the most energy per unit mass: 1 gram of fat provides about 9.4 (food) Calories, compared to 4.2 (food) Calories per 1 gram of carbohydrate. Remember that Calories associated with food, which are always capitalized, are not exactly the same as calories used in physics or chemistry, even though they...
