outline some of the potential impacts of human activity on the nitrogen cycle in soils

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Nitrogen is important for human beings as it is the essential part of amino acids which in turn forms proteins. Obvious effects of human activity has been observed with nitrogen cycle, since amount of nitrogen presented in the atmosphere will be changed due to pollution and green house gases. Burning of fuels are also a major reason of altering nitrogen content as it emits nitric oxides in to the air. Application of fertilisers increases nitrification and denitrification in to the atmosphere, which also increases excess release of nitric oxide in to air. Imbalance in nitrogen cycle leads to acidification and eutrophication etc.,

Problem 18.77: Potential in human cells. Some cell walls in the human body have a layer of negative charge on the inside surface and a layer of positive charge of equal magnitude on the outside surface. Suppose that the charge density on either surface is ± 0.50×10−3 C/m2, the cell wall is 5.0 nm thick, and the cell-wall material is air. Part A Find the magnitude of E⃗ in the wall between the two layers of charge. Express your answer...

Tritium is produced in the upper atmosphere by neutron cosmic rays interacting with air (Nitrogen and Oxygen). Tritium has a half-life of 12.3 yr. (a) Write down the tritium-producing reactions on N and O.   (b) Tritium beta-minus decays. Write down the decay reaction. (c) Tritium is found in tritiated water (HTO), thus there is some tritium in the human body, where the ratio of tritium to standard hydrogen (H-1) atoms is about 3.3×10−18. Consider a 100-kg person and assume the...
