How does cAMP activates protein kinase A?
The protein kinase A is a heterotetramer containing four subunits. Out of those four subunits 2 of them are regulatory subunits (RI and RII) and two of them are catalytic subunits. The regulatory subunits contain the sites for binding with cAMP. The regulatory subunits are normally bound with the catalytic subunits of the Protein Kinase A (PKA) making them inactive. Once the cAMP binds with the regulatory subunits, the catalytic subunits of PKA are free to perform their kinase activity by ATP as substrate. In this way cAMP activates protein kinase A.
